I know a few of us have discussed this trip for 2009 - some more details available now in advance of Wednesday’s catch-up (12th Nov, 8pm yard - all welcome).

The Ronde van Vlaanderen or Tour of Flanders is a classic bike race around Flanders - famous for its short, steep, often cobbled sections.

It also occurs early April when the weather in the low countries is not always ideal for cycling (ie similar to a Yorkshire summer).

As well as the professional race, which next year is on Sunday 5th April, there is an amateur sportive ride over the same course on closed roads the day before (Saturday 4th April).

The sportive actually has three route distances to choose from 260 km, 140 km, 75 km. There are also MTB options 28, 54, 75, 100 km.

So the idea is that we get across there on the Friday, do the Sportive on the Saturday - a big night out Saturday night followed by Sunday watching the pros and either nursing your hangover with strong Belgian coffee and Genever, or more Belgian beers. And of course large quantities of chips with mayo. The whole weekend is meant to have a real party atmosphere.

We could fly easily enough to Brussels or even Amsterdam, or drive. Depending on who was coming, perhaps those who were driving could take the bikes of those with less time who wanted to fly?

Also of course, you could just come for the Sportive, or just to watch the Pros on the Sunday.

If I can get any takers, we will need to book the Sportive place early (it is only 20 euros entry though) and then think about travel and accomodation.

Let me know if you are prob, poss or defo, or for those out on Wednesday we can discuss then.

By the way the weekend is one week before Easter.

JD told me that 6 riders fell off on the bend coming back from Nesfield during this weekend! This is the corner we know as “Oliver Anderson / Matthew Sturgeon” bend.
Its really greasy and slippery on the lanes just now, so please be carefull - Brake before the bend. Inside leg up, outside leg down with weight applied on the outside leg. Good luck and safe cycling to all.
